These fantastic circus party pictures and ideas come all the way from England. My customer Lindsey graciously shared these from her four-year-old son Marley and one-year-old daughter Kelsey's circus birthday party for your enjoyment and inspiration.

With balloons galore and over-the-top decor, Lindsey did an excellent job of creating an instant wow factor and transforming an ordinary meeting space into a festive big-top circus tent.

While Lindsey already had an absolutely stunning event planned, she used both my Party Planning and Party-in-a-Box Shopping Services to supplement her ideas with even more unique circus party supplies and decorations to ensure no detail would be overlooked.

In addition to a variety of fun carnival games with prizes, Lindsey created an eye-catching concession area at the party with a popcorn cart, slush puppie machine, hot dogs, and an old-timey candy stall.  My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

As Lindsey shows, circus parties are great for both boys or girls and, especially, for joint parties for multiple children. This theme can be scaled up or down depending on the size of your guest list, too, making it one of my favorite party themes.

Great Party Buys: Abby Cadabby & Ice Cream Party Favors

I came across some great party buys this week that I just had to share. The Abby Cadabby mini buckets, found in the dollar section at Target, would be perfect party favor containers or table decorations. At Dollar Tree I found the large ice cream lollipops, which would make great party favors or decorations at an ice cream cone themed party. They had the lollipops in peachy pink, green, and purple. I couldn't believe both of these cuties were only $1!

Connor's Second Birthday Pool Party with Crab & Bubbles Theme

This birthday swimming pool party looks like a blast! I was so thrilled to help Connor's mommy, Ashley, by designing a happy birthday banner, bubble party favors, and confetti to perfectly match the crab and bubbles theme for his party.


I love all the little details Ashley added like the crab ribbon around the cupcake serving dish! I'm a big believer that small details make a big impression, and this party definitely had quite a few! The cupcake toppers below were created by The Birthday House on Etsy.



Here's what Ashley had to say about the Connor's 2nd birthday party:
"The pool was a hit; the kids loved the pool toys! Connor loved opening presents this year but was only interested in the toy presents. All the adults loved the decorations! I loved how everything turned out and how excited Connor was!"

Ashley sent me a picture of Connor's party invitation and said she needed a "Happy Birthday" banner and bubble favors to match. I found some bubbly light blue paper and matched the font perfectly with invitations to help her create a seamless theme. Working with Belly Feathers is super simple!


There couldn't be a more perfect crab party decoration than this beachy crab balloon. Who wouldn't smile at the sight of him?!


I love the way Ashley displayed the cute sea-themed plates and napkins in these metal tubs. It's a great way to keep these looking neat and in place, while letting their designs decorate the table. I included the personalized confetti as a little surprise with Ashley's order.



The number 2 suckers Ashley found are perfect for a second birthday party. They were made by Sweet Lollipop Shop on Etsy.

Handmade Circus Birthday Party: Let Your Birthday Boy Be the Ringleader

Circus parties have been on my mind a lot lately, and I think this would be a wonderful theme for a little boy's birthday party. There are so many off-the-shelf products available at craft, discount, and party stores to get you started, so all you have to do is add a few handmade touches to personalize your party and make it special.




Here are a few circus birthday party ideas:

• Set the circus stage.
  Create a big-top tent by stringing long lengths of netting in various colors from your ceiling in the center of your room to the edges. Helium balloons, string lights, and triangular pennant banner flags would make festive additions. If you have a brightly colored metal or plastic tub, flip it upside down to create an elephant step that can be used in the circus show. Maybe add a bench for performers to stand on in the center of the room, too.

• Let the birthday boy be the circus ringmaster.
  When guests arrive, usher them to a seat, hand them a small popcorn bag (available at Hobby Lobby) filled to the top, and tell them that the show will begin momentarily. Have the birthday boy ringleader make a grand entrance to start the party. For entertainment, he could perform a magic trick or show how he has tamed a wild beast (aka your family pet). He could get your dog to do some tricks or hold your cat's front paws to it walk across the stage on two legs.
  
  
  Be creative and get the whole family involved. Create signs to introduce different segments of the show and, most importantly, one that says, "Applause!" Siblings could perform supporting acts or assist the ringleader. This is a great time showcase special talents and reuse old dance recital or Halloween costumes. Have mom or dad make a drum roll to create suspense during performances. Practice ahead of time and try to keep the show to about 15 minutes, since young guests may have short attention spans.
  
  
• Give out tickets to play carnival party games.
  After the show, take the guests to your backyard to play a variety of carnival-style party games. Kids will enjoy handing over tickets, which can be purchased at Wal-Mart or other discount stores, to play the games. If desired, make your own tickets with the birthday boy's name featured prominently.
  
  The games can be simple with dollar-store prizes. Collect and stack soda cans to see if guests can knock them over by shooting at them with a water gun or by tossing a tennis ball. Create a ring-toss with 2-liter soda bottles and a ring made from a plastic container lid with the center cut out. Kids can guess how many M&Ms are in a jar. Have a sibling try to guess a kid's weight before checking the estimate with a bathroom scale. There's a million games you can create with items found around your house. Create signs for each game station to give them a uniform look.
  
  
• Ringling Bros. animal crackers make the perfect circus party favor.
  Since the box is already decorated like a circus car full of animals, just add a cute tag with ribbon to thank your guests for attending.

Wedding Favors with Married Couple's New Address

My friend Jessica told me about this wonderful idea that she saw at her friend Heather's wedding, and I just had to share it with you.

Once married, a lot of couples will have a new mailing address, and the wedding is the perfect time to share this new address with your guests. You certainly don't want to delay receiving post-wedding gifts, Christmas cards, or anything else while your friends or family try to track down your address.

Heather incorporated her new address onto the bubbles for her wedding send-off, similar to the picture shown below. I absolutely love when favors serve dual purposes like this!




No matter what type of ceremony toss or wedding favor you choose, you can find a way to tastefully include your married address as part of the favors.

Mermaid Party Favors on Dazzle Design

Handmade Baby Boy Shower Idea: Preparing for Blast Off

Once again, my friend Brandi has come up with a super fun nursery theme for her soon to launch baby boy based on the book, Curious George and the Rocket. As a result, my fellow shower hostesses and I decided to focus her baby shower around red rockets and stars with "Preparing for Blast Off" as the theme.




Here's a run-down of the handmade items created for the baby shower:

• Handmade Baby Shower Invitations featured a red rocket mounted on a spring to show it blasting off a ribbon rocket trail.
  
  
• Shooting Star Hanging Decorations and Blast Off Party Banner reinforced the baby shower theme as guests entered the party.
  
  
• Starburst Guessing Game featured a trifle dish layered with different colored Starburst candies. The person who guessed closest to the number of candies in the dish got to take it home as a prize.
  
  
  
  
  
• Rocket Diaper Cake made a festive centerpiece for the gift table, as well as a functional take-home for mommy.
  
  
• Star-punched Sandwich Flags brought a little whimsy to the refreshment table.
  
  
• Curious George Rocket Cake was masterfully decorated with precious details. This baby shower cake was almost too cute to eat.
  
  
  
  
  
• Blast Off Baby Bingo Cards kept guests engaged as the shower gifts were opened. Attendees wrote one baby item that they thought might be opened during the shower in each of the cards' squares, and as gifts were opened, they could cross the respective items off on their cards until someone shouted, "Bingo!"
  
  
• Mini Moon Pie Party Favors provided an out-of-this-world treat for guests to take home. The personalized favors stated the shower theme, mommy's name, and the baby shower date on the back. They looked adorable placed in a small wire baby carriage decorated with stars.

Planning a Classy Wedding on a Small Budget - Go Handmade

My husband and I got married last fall, and I was dumbfounded at the various costs of a wedding. Even after planning large events in my professional life for years, nothing had prepared me for the costs of adding the label "wedding" to anything you might need to buy or rent.

I'm here with some encouraging news, though. You can have that special wedding that you've dreamed about even on the minutest of budgets without having to sacrifice on elegance. The key is to go handmade on as much as you can. My whole wedding, including all of the homemade items shown below, cost only $8,000, which is less than half the national average of $21,814, according to The Wedding Report.



The best part of going handmade is that you end up with a highly personalized and unique wedding that welcomes your guests to get to know your joint personality as a couple for perhaps the very first time. To me, that's even better than the money you'll save.

Here are some of my handmade, money-saving wedding tips:

1. Don't skimp on the wedding theme
   Before you purchase anything, spend some extra time thinking about the elements you want to define your wedding experience, and then let these elements guide you through all of your wedding arrangements. This can be your colors, flower choices, personality (fun, sophisticated, etc.), or lifestyle (outdoorsy, beachy, etc.) in any combination.
   
   
   
   For our wedding, I chose hydrangeas because the blooms are so large that you basically get a bouquet-sized arrangement for the price of one flower. I love the look of blue hydrangeas, so I picked two shades of light blue for my overall wedding colors. I also wanted to play off the idea of love birds for our reception and show our fun and laid-back personalities. This combination of hydrangeas, blue, love birds, and fun/laid-back style gave me plenty of detailed elements to work with as I started to make handmade items to carry out this theme. As I shopped for wedding bargains and craft supplies, I always asked myself if the item(s) up for consideration tied in with the theme, and if they didn't, then they weren't a good deal. This will greatly simplify decision making and help your wedding achieve a consistent feel.
   
   
2. Try not to purchase "wedding" items
   Like I mentioned earlier, the word "wedding" comes at a premium price. Just about anything for your wedding except maybe your apparel can be created with a little out-of-the-box thinking. Consider your ring-bearer pillow. It's just a pillow with rings tied to it. I made the pillow below by hand sewing (I'm not very good with a sewing machine) two pieces of felt together embellished with a few blue buttons - items that I happened to have lying around.
   
   
   How about your guest book? You want to record your guests' attendance, but those little books are so pricey, especially if you only need a few pages like I did. Instead, I used a well-wishes tree. I cut out little squares of paper with blue birds printed on them and attached a string of ribbon to the top. Guests were encouraged to write a little message on the cards and tie them on the tree. This tree created an interesting centerpiece for my welcome table, too, saving me money on my florist bill, which brings me to my next tip.
   
   
   
3. Let wedding items serve multiple purposes
   You can't beat a two-for-one deal. Just like the well-wishes tree was able to be both the wedding guest book and a large table arrangement, there are plenty of other ways to let items serve double duty. For example, my wedding favors (or wedding favours depending on where you live) doubled as placecards. I found little nests and oval soaps online. Then I printed the guests' names on little strips of paper with blue birds in the background and secured them around the nests.
   
   
   
   The one area where I splurged on professional printing was my invitations. I needed a way for guests to RSVP and also include a map to the venues. Instead of having two coordinating cards printed, I simply had one tiny card printed with a URL for guests to RSVP and print custom directions. The Wedding Channel has a great interface for letting you set up a custom website for free with RSVP functionality, uploading maps, etc. I was able to let one card serve as the map and RSVP card, saving me on printing, extra envelopes, and postage. Plus, many of my guests commented on how much more convenient the website was for them, and I thought this method fit in with our laid-back style perfectly.
   
   
   
4. Use what you already have in new ways
   There's no better way to add personal flair to your wedding and save money than by using items you already own and love. Run around your house and try to look at everything with a fresh pair of eyes, keeping your wedding theme in mind.
   
   After speaking with florists, I found that I could save quite a bit by providing my own containers for flower arrangements. My mom had given me these cute cream-colored fluted bowls years ago as a gift, and my friend Brandi decorated a bridal shower she threw for me with large birds' nests and graciously gave them to me afterwards. I was able to take these to my florist, and he created some one-of-a-kind arrangements with my own containers that perfectly fit my theme. If you do this, it's a good idea to put labels on the bottoms of your containers letting guests know they should be returned to you. Sometimes, wedding guests like to take centerpieces as a souvenirs, which is fine, as long as you get them back once the flowers are past their prime.
   
   
   
   My reception seating chart was also made from found items at my house. Instead of a fancy printed chart, I mounted slips of paper with table numbers and guest names to a basket-weave tray with pearl-embellished hat pins. I happened to have a little easel to hold it up, too.

Executing a Handmade Party Theme with Only Three Elements

If you want to host an all handmade party for which none of the items are from a mass-market theme, you can pull it off easily with only three handmade elements.

I'll illustrate exactly what I mean by telling you about a baby shower I helped throw for my friend, Brandi. Her nursery theme focused on the ocean - mermaids, bubbles, and undersea creatures - in a magical palette of sea-green teal, violet, and lime green. You couldn't ask for a more fun idea to work with, but at the same time, you can't exactly buy a baby mermaid shower kit at your local party-supply store. We wanted guests to know the nursery theme, so they could purchase gifts accordingly for the mommy-to-be. Therefore, everything had to be custom made, which I loved as a craftier. To carry out the theme, I focused on three carefully coordinated items - the invitation, the party game, and the favor.

1. The Invitation
   The invitation is the first party impression your guests will receive. Let your custom invitation introduce them to the party theme and explain what they can expect once they get there. If they need to bring anything out of the ordinary or dress a certain way for the party, be sure to note it. Most importantly, the invitation's function is to get your guests excited about attending. I think a unique handcrafted invite is sure to get them pumped and ready to RSVP, "Yes!"
   
   
   The invitation above shows a sparkly tailed baby mermaid inside a bubble with the message, "A Little Mermaid is on Her Way." This tells the guests that the party is for a little girl and that it's ocean themed. The waves of the scalloped vellum echo this sea theme. When you pull up on the ribbons, you realize that those aren't really ribbons at all but instead a spray from a smiley whale's blow hole. This little surprise is a fun way to engage the recipients and reinforce the sea-creature theme. All of the party information is conveniently printed below the whale.
   
   
   
2. The Party Game or Activity
   Once guests arrive you need to have a way to demonstrate the handmade party theme in action. You can go as elaborate or as simple as you want with this. For a wine tasting, you might make wine tags around the bottles that have an image used on the invitation. For a little girl's tea party, you would of course have teapots and cups. Both of these examples would reinforce the party's theme.
   
   For this baby shower, we went really simple. We played baby bingo, where guests write down one baby item in each square of a bingo card that they think the mommy-to-be will receive at the shower. As gifts are opened, you can "X" out any gift that you got correctly until someone calls out, "Bingo!" We made the game tie in with the theme by placing a little whale in the center wild card square of the bingo cards. Even something as simple as this, reinforces the party's theme and shows you really thought everything out.
   
   
3. The Party Favor
   I, personally, cannot have a party without giving out a small favor. This small token is a way to let your guests know how much you appreciate their attendance and provides a great way to close out the party theme. A handmade party favor is an especially wonderful treat to receive, too.
   
   Something bubble related seemed ideal for this baby shower. I found little bubble-shaped bottles at a craft store and filled them with inexpensive bubble bath in coordinating party colors. To dress them up, I tied on some ribbon to match the invitation and a sparkly baby mermaid tag that said "Bubble Bath" to make sure the guests knew what they were getting. Viola! An adorable handcrafted party favor that fit with the shower's theme and was inexpensive to create.
   

As long as you tie in your handmade party's theme on these three elements - the invitation, the party game/activity, and the party favor, you will succeed in throwing a super fun and memorable event. If you have time and energy to create more tie-in pieces for the party, by all means, go for it! Simply use these three elements as your party base. Happy party planning!
